Campaign Update

A few steps ahead, but miles to go!

Saahas has come a long way!Today, it operates as a Mobile App for iPhones, Android phones and a range of tablets and devices, as well as a Web App and a Facebook Messenger Chatbot. Over 40,000 entries across 196 countries are categorized into 11 verticals, and five libraries of information for survivors, bystanders, learners, legal and medical information stand to support survivors of Gender-Based Violence (#GBV), to create active bystanders and to educate learners.

Creating Saahas has been a great journey for me, personally, too: from learning to code to building a chatbot, this has been a very important experience of affirming the fact that girls can take to STEM, too, and that the sky's the limit when it comes to learning new things.

In the time I've spent with survivors and individuals seeking to become active bystanders in the recent past, I've come to understand thatsurvivors who have faced violence either don’t know where to go for help, or don’t have resources to find out where to go for help. Sometimes, their situation prevents them from finding help, and that can be extremely dangerous to their safety. The app continues to recognize that a survivor’s choice to stand up to violence and a bystander’s choice to intervene in a case of violence is an act of courage.

The goal of the app is now expanding: I want to reach out to more people in need of it. In the next few weeks, I am working towards getting our libraries translated into different languages, and towards building partnerships for a service-model delivery of the app for survivors and potential bystanders who may need and benefit from its resources, but may not be able to access the app. If you'd like to partner with me, please reach out to me on info@redelephantfoundation.org.

Dear Kirthi,

Your work amazes and inspires me. In addition to all you are making possible, I love how you describe your own experience of growth, through the steps you have taken in creating this tremendous project. Here is an example of your far reach, I want to send it here so that others responding can enjoy it too. My 90 year old father in a hospital in Montreal (he is going to be ok) was deep into your latest book, which I had loaned him. A nurse spotted it and stopped to say what a brilliant author you are. She has read an earlier book of yours and loves you. Montreal, Canada. I am taking WorldPulse info to her tomorrow.

Wind beneath your feet, dear sister,

Tam

Dear, dear, dear Tam,

Thank you for your kind, kind words and your encouragement -- I cannot thank you enough for all the goodness you send my way! Thank you for everything, and lots of love to your father, from me! I'm moved tremendously to know of the kind nurse's words - I send all three of you lots of love and good thoughts <3

THANK YOU SO MUCH TAM!

Wow Kirthi, I'm so impressed that you learned to code and managed to get this app out into the world - you are clearly a very determined woman! I'd also love to see a copy of your book about 50 women - can I buy it? Where I live in the UK, my feminist sisters have just published a book about the women who built our city (The Women who built Bristol) and tomorrow I'm launching a poetry anthology full of poems by women speaking of themselves (Project Boast), so it feels as if women's voices are beig valued and heard. We must all keep up the momentum with great projects and support each other. Many years ago I was sexually attacked in public in India and no-one did anything to help - at least now there is more awareness of the problem. You are contributing to a solution. Be proud! Keep going Kirthi xx
