“My Journey”

I am a jovial poet and rights activist form Zimbabwe. Advocating for women’s rights comes naturally for me as it was a notion I grew up with .My father trained me and my two sisters to be independent women who could do whatever we needed without intervention from males. His argument was that he had seen so much hurt on the womenfolk and he had vowed that his precious daughters would never go through such animosity. This saw me growing into an independent and objective speaker who is very sensitive to my rights and those of other women in my community. Many women would come to me in the high density suburbs where I used to live and ask me on counsel on how to deal with their abusive husbands .I was fortunate to have met powerful women from whom I would get legal advice, this led to many men changing their abusive ways for fear of being reported and victimised by the rest of the community. I went on to work for a nongovernmental organisation that gave me an opportunity to work with HIV/AIDS positive women who most of the times were going through psychological problems as well as health crisis. Those that were coming from discordant families were either left alone to take care of their children or were treated badly at home. This made me understand that every plight occurring in society is feminised be it poverty, illness, even disasters. I realised that for women to unshackle the chain binding them they needed to attain a certain level of education be it formal or informal as to me education liberates the mind and opens the eyes to another world. Of note, as well is the publishing of my poetry anthologies that were described in the media as women’s handbooks. I was also listed as one of the women who inspire in Zimbabwe. I write about women and advocate that they be considered in the society, nation and the world at large. I am also a performing artist whose main theme is women empowerment. The organisation I am currently working for has a loud voice with regards to agenda on ending child marriages, supporting women to be independent in the economy value chain. Apart from giving them access to land just as their male counterparts we help them market their products to high end markets. We now work with a mass of women who are poised to change the world as well as train other women to look beyond their current plights as there is hope beyond today.

I want to continue to sharpen my social media skills inorder to help me reach a greater audience with modern technology. My zeal helps me overcome my own problems within the society so as to serve others. I am married to a wonderful man who is not threatened by my ideals; together we run an online news website where I report on women mostly so as to give them a voice. I continue to be open to more and more information as information is the weapon to conquer the poison that has destroyed our societies today.
