Empovernmet of Web 2.0

While doing my research project about cultural and religious influences on Human Rights in MENA region, I found a video of the Egyptian woman, telling her personal story of sexual violence on the streets of Cairo. I searched for herl in the web, and eventually found her through Facebook group. I contacted her and it became motivational experience for me to come to Cairo and make more contacts with people here: activists, students, or just mothers, who has their words to say. I would never have done it without the help of digital media. I think, now days, Web 2.0 is the platform, where you can find yourself, nevertheless it is very easy to get lost in the amount of information. One click and you can find first world news and opinions on the latest clash of violence in Egypt, or receive feedback on the law issues of women protection, you need to know. Or find other women from around the world to organize a photo project on Tibetans refugees in Himachal Pradesh (Indian state). The words, you could never share through media and newspapers, because of editors and strictly organized time in the air, you can share through Web. It is fascinating. Sometimes you are too afraid to tell your family or government about sexual harassment or any other case, happened to you. Because you are afraid to be prejudged or, in the end, stay without any support. But you can tell your story through Web: in Facebook or any other social net and you will receive feedback and support by people, who has been in the same problem. Who has passed or passing through the act of terrible, violent disrespect to his bodies and human nature identity. I consider this to be a huge achievement of the Web. As a moral human being and women I want these stories to be heard and shared. And sometimes digital space is the only chance for them to be heard. To be heard by people, government officials, lawyers, social scholars. And by me. The other women are empowering for me. Because I feel that there are brave and huge hearts able to make a difference. And I am happy to be a part of it.
