Pulse of Change

I close my eyes and what I see, I see me, a young woman saying what matters to me to other people like me. Together we are taking a stand on an issue that the world needs to act upon.

I see a time when young women can speak out for themselves, when it can become an ordinary everyday thing to air your views and to have access to other people’s views. I see it becoming a lifestyle for young women in the sports community to communicate with each other and with those who affect their future and current situation.

A time to be what one can be by voicing our their thoughts, fears and concerns as we work out our way towards a reality that accepts women as equal persons with the right to be do any sport or physical activity they wish. I want to see a time when all women and girls are free to lead sport organizations and teams, to be heard and seen in the media as normal and ordinary.

But you see, this will mean we have to be prepared, the world may say here is space, and we have to know how to speak then, otherwise what we will do with the space. The world may awake one day and say ‘what do you think?’ we must know how to think, we must know how to share our opinions from our perspectives in our way and also to see things in our own way and not be afraid or uncomfortable to share this view.

Being a Voice of Our Future Correspondent will help me achieve my vision of being a global player, reaching a wide audience, sharing and learning. It will inspire and move me to learn more about my environment, the people and the issues and to express these in a way that people in other parts of the world may appreciate and gain insight into my reality and the reality of those I’ll write about.

As a Correspondent, I will achieve an ambition I had as a child to be a journalist, but somehow I didn’t get round to doing so as I decided to first get into development work. It will be a demonstration that it is possible to achieve ones dreams, it will mean to my community that anyone can speak for themselves.

It will mean to my community that I can bring to the world the issues that arise from my work in my community and I can bring to my community the issues around the world. It will be validation that even young women’s voices count and they are important.

It will mean a broader platform to bring with me other women and girls who are sharpening their voices in readiness to speak; it will be an opportunity to achieve for myself, for the women in sport community and for my country as well.

It will be a big leap into myself and what I can be.
