Mail without fire

Por desarrollar mi trabajo en el área de la educación agropecuaria, conozco sobre la necesidad de contar con el estudio de los factores climáticos. Estos factores son de suma importancia cuando se planea una producción, ya que está condicionada directamente por las condiciones climáticas del lugar. En la región patagónica argentina se produce una gran diferenciación climatológica, debido a su extensión, como así también condiciones de fragilidad ambiental que vuelven muy vulnerable a la región. Es por esto que desde el año 2000 trabajo en la implementación de programas sobre medio ambiente, ya sea por la necesidad de conocer y registrar datos climatológicos inexistentes ò escasos, o por la necesidad de realizar acciones que no destruyen el ambiente.
Por eso en principio cuando no disponía de recursos en la escuela donde trabajo, comenzamos realizando mediciones de temperatura, viento, precipitaciones, presión atmosférica, en forma manual, hasta que recibimos la colaboración de una empresa, que nos permitió instalar una estación meteorológica digital. Esta nueva tecnología nos sorprendió con la cantidad de datos que nos suministraba, a tal punto que casi no llegábamos a comprenderlos todo. Esta situación me hizo pensar en la posibilidad de encontrarle utilidad a los datos que se obtenían de esta estación. Fue así como establecimos vínculos con algunas organizaciones que podían llegar a necesitar esta información. Una de estas instituciones es Parque Nacionales y otra es la Dirección Provincial de Manejo de Fuego, las cuales nos comentaron que era muy importante contar con los datos de nuestra estación por encontrarse en una zona de la cual no se tenían registros. Ambas instituciones les interesaba contar con datos específicos para poder determinar el riesgo de incendio para la estación de verano.. Asi fue como tuve que pensar de que forma la estación meteorológica podía ser útil para la comunidad.
Era necesario comunicar los datos a diario, y la mejor forma de hacerlo era a través de un correo electrónico. Los alumnos del segundo año del nivel medio fueron organizados para ser los encargados de este envío, tarea que no fue fácil, ya que debieron entrenarse en el uso del correo electrónico. La mayoría de ellos por primera vez accedía a este tipo de tecnología, y desconocían la importancia de estos datos en la prevención de incendios.
EL proyecto actualmente se sigue llevando adelante, debido a la importancia que merece este tema en la región, por eso decidimos nombrarlo “Mail without fire". Los alumnos saben que los datos que envían son de suma importancia para la comunidad, porque con ellos se puede alertar sobre la posibilidad del riesgo de incendio, y de esa formar preservar los recursos naturales de la Región Patagónica.

Mail without fire

Because of my work development in the area of agricultural education, I know of the need to take into consideration the study of climate factors. These factors are of great importance when a production is being planned, since it is directly conditioned by the climate conditions of the location. In the Argentinean Region of the Patagonia there is a huge climate change, due to its size, just like the environmental fragility conditions that turn the region very vulnerable as well. It is for this that since year 2000 I work in the implementation of environmental programs, either due to the need to learn and register inexistent or few climate data points, or due to the need to work on actions that do not destroy the environment.

That is why in the beginning when I did not have resources at the school where I work, we started measuring temperature, wind, precipitation, atmospheric pressure, in a natural way, until we received the help of an organization which allowed us to install a digital meteorological station. This new technology surprised us with the quantity of data that it provided us, up to a point that we almost were not able to understand it all. This situation made me think of the possibility of finding a use to the data that was collected from this station. It was like this how we established a link with some organizations that could end of needing this information. One of these institutions is the National Parks and another one is the Provincial Office of Fire Management, which told us that it was very important to have the data of our station due to its location in an area which they did not have information. Both institutions were interested in having specific data to be able to determine the fire hazard for the summer season. That is how I had to think of a way that the meteorological station could be useful for the community.

It was necessary to communicate the data daily, and the best way to do it was via an email. The students from the second year of middle school were organized to be in charge of this email, an assignment that was not easy, since they had to be trained in the email usage. The majority of them was accessing this type of technology for the first time, and did not know the importance of this data for fire prevention purposes.

The project is currently progressing, due to the importance that this topic deserves in the region; we decided to call it “Mail without fire". The students know that the data they send is very important for the community, because with them they can be alerted on the fire hazard risk, and in that way protect the natural resources in the Region of the Patagonia.
