Farewell, Rita

Yesterday, the great human being, mind and soul Rita Levi Montalcini has left us.

We'll miss you. I will.

Have never had the occasion to meet you in person - that's not something so possible. But I followed your research, your endeavor as a human being...

I and my friends used to joke saying there is only one neuron in the World, who jumps from brain to brain so fast to allow any of us to show from time to time some almost-intelligent behavior. We realized there were not so many, from our side, and we jokingly blamed you, Rita, for holding Neuron almost all the time with you. Now, sadly, Neuron will have a lot of spare time. I wish it will visit us, all of us humans, a bit more, and use it for the best of us all.

I don't think there is something I can add about Rita Levi Montalcini. You all know already. I could say about the discovery of the Nerve Growth Factor, or about her decision to not marry (something entirely "out" in her times) to devote herself to science. Of her daily commitment to improve the life and instruction of women and youth. Of the Nobel prize, of course.

But this all is, as I said, known stuff.

I wish, for me and who shares the same desire, we can follow (maybe slowly, as our capability allow) your example.

Thank you, Rita.

We'll not forget.
