First story
About Me:
I am about half way through my Master's program at Portland State University. I am studying Sustainability Education in PSU's innovative, cutting edge program, Leadership in Ecology, Culture and Learning. I have a particular interest in what role emotions play in teaching and learning about sustainability, and what emotions lead to behavioral change, creativity and innovation in solving sustainability issues. This passion, which is directing my scholarship, all stems from reading a quote from Rachel Carson: "It is not half as important to know as it is to feel."
My background is in gender studies and sociology with a particular focus on work and labor within these disciplines. I have, prior to graduate school, spent much of my work life in the natural foods industry. The informal education this gave me around food issues and policy more or less spurred my current endeavor.
My Passions:
food, water, gardening, animals, friends
My Challenges:
When I am afraid or stressed, I can isolate myself from my community.
My Vision for the Future:
A verdant and just (r)evolution
My Areas of Expertise:
feminist pedagogy, inclusive and integrative teaching methods, adult education, writing, taking baths
