Women, Water Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) Cameroon

Today the 15th of November, 2011 saw the first meeting of Women Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) Cameroon which was held at Mrs Catherine Mwengella House at Street 7, Campaign Street, Buea, the South West Region Cameroon. 5 Local NGOs, Cameroon Vision Trust, Women for Peace, Dibota Foundation, Chameg and African Female Journalist on Climate Change (AFJACC) came together to establish the Women WASH Cameroon Network with the Motto: Water is Life, Sanitation is Dignity and Knowledge is Power. The aim of the network is to help the rampant outbreak of water borne /sanitation related diseases and to ensure that Cameroon communities have access to clean and safe water, adequate sanitation and knowledge to promote sustainable community development. On of the first project the Women WASH Cameroon Network seeks to establish is to set up a rainwater harvesting systems at the Buea District Hospital which is seriously facing acute water shortage. The women have promised to become water ambassadors within their communities to ensure sustainable livelihoods and development. They hope to use the access to clean and safe water and adequate sanitation and knowledge as to tool the achieve the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) in Cameroon and beyond.
