I am a journalist, writer and gender equality and women's rights campaigner. Writing is my passion and I use my pen/keyboard to highlight the many issues affecting women and children whereever they are. I also enjoy reading about these issues. Writing means a lot to me. I believe by writing these things we are not only changing lives, healing wounds but closing that gap that exists between us as humans. By speaking up we are not only healing others but ourselves too.
Personally, I have learned and develop myself through other people. Thanks to the internet, particularly social media and forums like World Pulse, I have been able to read stories of other women that inspires me to continue doing the work I do. Through digital media, I have networked with loads of other women across geographical boundaries whose works and activism inspires me greatly. Moreover, my audience base has increased immensely. When I started working as a newspaper intern back then in Sierra Leone, it was a mile stone to have a story published in the local newspaper serving a readership of about 5,000 people. Today, My works have reached millions of people across the world. Thanks to digital media, without which this could not have been possible. I am also inspired by the comment I get from people, mostly people I have never met, who get touched by the stories i write. It is because of these people and this oportunity that I keep doing what I do.
Despite all these improvements, it is sad to note that yet there are women out there, in villages and towns who are not able to reach out like I have been able to. Women who suffer abuse on a daily basis, girls who endure forced marriage and forced circumcision but lack the will to stand against these cultural practices must be given the opportunity to speak up. However, insufficient power supply, inadequate internet access, poverty, inequality are halting the chances for these deprived women to be heard.
My Vision for the Future
I envision a world where everyone is free to speak up against the issues they feel strongly about.
I see a world wherein water supply, power supply and internet access are made availble to people all over the world, from small corners in villages to parks in big cities.
