New Year’s Revolution

At the end of each year since my mid 20's, I usually took stock of what I had accomplished, it was a great practiceand one of which I promised myself it would never cease. Fast track three years later, this became an annoying chore because I found out that most things I put on the list, didn’t come to fruition. There are items on the list that I couldn’t obviously accomplish because of financial reasons, such as buying a home or investing money in certain stocks. However looking at my new year’s resolution list for several years, I discovered that what was beyond my control did not amount to more than 10% of what I needed to accomplish. Suddenly that weight of failure started to engulf my brain, severely evaluating what went wrong all these years. Did I stop caring? Was I too busy? Were the resolutions unrealistic?

I read the list out loud, and half way through, I began feeling ashamed, especially when I read “Read a book every month.” I quickly glanced over my small gray three tier bookshelf, and spotted a book which was purchased at the beginning of the first term of President Barack Obama, and I had yet to finish. In fact, truth be told, the book was submerged with dust, “well,” I said to myself, being an optimistic individual, “at least the dust has managed to be a home owner.”

“How do I fix this?” Enter the Art of Empowerment (PDF attached below). The World Pulse training introduced this topic on the second module, and it has helped tremendously! By taking the 4 Steps towards empowering myself which are:

  1. Self-awareness – Where am I now?

  2. Vision Crafting – Where do I want to go?

  3. Transforming – What do I need to change to get there?

  4. Growing Edge – What is my next growth step

Of course all these steps will mean nothing, if you don’t tell yourself and most importantly believe that it can be done! Development, change or progress doesn’t happen in a blink on an eye, but it takes a revolution to say enough is enough! I realized “where am I now,” is I put off tasks to the last moment, and then I am overwhelmed and end up not doing what I was supposed to do. This is how I have ended up with unchecked tasks of several new year’s resolution and a bookshelf full of dust! Not anymore! The life I want, the NGO I want to expand (www.hfke.org) all depends in the power of my willingness to do what needs to get done!

My life doesn’t have to be stagnant anymore, and for I long time, I blamed everybody and everything but myself… A very good friend ofmine once told me, “don’t let yourself become your worst enemy.”
