Module 3 Q&A

Hello Everyone!

During the calls last week we were able to answer a few great questions. Just in case some of you haven't had the time or connectivity to listen to the calls, I wanted to provide a short summary of some of the questions and answers for you here. I hope this helps you formulate your drafts!

Q1. The idea of Op-ed seems more focused on broader community, such as global and international level, rather than small local and national level. Is my understanding wrong?

A1. In general, there is no one right way with the Op-ed. However, speaking about a specific, local thing that you know well, but connecting it to a larger, global, human theme, is a very powerful approach. You want to think about the audience you want to reach and the change you want to affect. So, if it is a very local issue, you would focus more on that, not necessarily ignoring the global/national issue but speaking more to the local audiences.

Q2. In the learning materials, Anniversaries can also be written as an op-ed. How does this work?

A2. Take the example of International Women's Day, it can be a great focus for your Op-Ed. It's a way to discuss/capture something that most people are aware of generally and allow you to organize your ideas. Anniversaries are a good hook to get your reader's attention.

Q3. The main idea of an Op-Ed is opinion and critical essay. Right?

A3. The main idea is to make a case, with evidence, for your idea and causes, that are of public value. The central idea is that it is valuable for more people to know and understand your position.

Q4. What kinds of topics can we write as an op-ed from small local and community level?

A4. You can write about nearly anything that you know well about. If you'd like to send some ideas to Rachael, myself or Katie (VOF@theopedproject.org), please feel free! Also, you can post your ideas here, or to the VOF Correspondents' Network (VOFCN).

I am really excited to see your bold voices express passionate opinions, and to help shape public thought. Hopefully this is just the first of many Op-Eds you will write!
