Reflections On My First Assignment !

Dearest All,

The first module has been nothing short of an extraordinary enriching experience for me. It has been a learning process as this was my first interview ever conducted. And I am humbled by what I have learnt from this.

I was a bundle of nerves on the day of my interview. The lady whom I had requested to meet at a coffee shop, is a stalwart in the field of women's rights and activism. I expected her to be stern and composed just like a woman of her stature demanded to be. But I was wrong ! The moment she entered and gave me a big warm smile, all my pre- conceived notions went out of the window. She smiled and was happy to share her experience with me. That moment on I realized I was no more nervous as the excitement to listen to her took over me.

The interview went smoothly as we discussed myriad topics from women activism to education of girls in India. Her warmth and smile ( she laughed a lot, just like a child) filled our conversations with love and made things easier for me to ask. I listened more and took down notes. I was well prepared with my questionnaire, hence the question and answers were free flowing, more like a conversation and less like Q&A.

Why Did I Choose Rita For My Interview?

When I first started looking for interviewees, I had the choice of three other women. But I chose Rita because of the outstanding cause she was supporting. Yes, she is a relatively known face but for me her work was more important and necessary. I associated myself with the kind of work she was doing for the women of my country. It became important for me to be that voice which would help uplift her work and reach a global audience like World Pulse. It is interesting to note that she herself is a member of our WP community. The World Pulse connection definitely made things comfortable for us as I explained her about our many recent campaigns and programs of our community and she was glad to hear them.

For my next interview, I plan to incorporate what Rita taught me - smile and be as warm as possible. Yes, being well versed with our subject definitely helps in framing the questions better. If we can manage to find a connection somewhere, like in our case it was WP, then things becomes easier for both the parties. Listening more and paying attention to minute details is important as it helps us later in writing the profile. I am glad I did that !

I am definitely looking forward to my next session of interview. To another round of cherished and interesting talk with my interviewees.

Thank you for this opportunity.
