I assure you CHANGE IS GONNA COME

WE ETHIOPIANS ARE ENJOYING THE FRESH BREATH OF A GREAT CHANGE. HAVE YOU EVER SEEN A NATION SMILING AT ONCE? YES WE ARE.

I was born when my country had a war with so and so…

I was going to elementary school when there were demonstrations…sounds of bullets…armed soldiers trying to stop demonstrators…

When I was in high school a military jeep driving back and fro with a machine gun pointing to pedestrians….

Young men were registered to go to military camp and participate in the war…

  • We discussed war while walking to church

  • Our parents talk about war over coffee

  • Going and coming to school hearing about war was normal

  • We kneel down and pray about war(to stop it or for victory)

One day, I opened our dictionary which is the largest in our house. When I opened the pages for letter ‘E’ and went down to search if there is a meaning for Ethiopia. Yes, there was.

Ethiopia- war liking people

I checked another old dictionary in my father’s library.

Ethiopia- it’s a picture of a woman in charcoal black. Yes, that’s me, that’s my nation. We are not a war liking people. Unfortunately, we always had war liking governors.

Ethiopia is a country of beautiful nation. We don’t have that charcoal black color indeed, we are beautiful Africans with lighter skin and soft hair. When we go to Asia and Europe, they think we Indians. When we go to other east African countries they call us Mizungu( foreigner- when they describe it in Kiswahili). We are proud to be an African. Our capital city Addis Ababa is a also a capital city for Africa. AU head quarter, UNECA and other big NGO’s based here in Addis.

Four months ago, a man who gives a great respect to his mother for bringing him up with all her wisdom and advises came to power. We have got a leader that hates killings, war, grudges, corruption and preaches unity and love. To hear this in our soil is like a dream or a wish that you’ll never see it in reality. Writers and poet are writing as much as they can. Freedom for press became real for first time. We saw what was going on in our prison. We heard so many secrets about our country. It seems like we don’t know anything about our mother land.

We had been in a war with Eretria more than 20 years, 100,000 lives were gone from both sides. The love and strong bond between these nations is strong. Our leader flew his aircraft to Asmara and meet Mr Esayas Afewerki the president of Eretria. He was welcomed by the Eritreans in unbelievable ways. I was in front of the TV to see that event. All the women, the youth and children who were not born by the time the war were smiling. I see the power of trusting someone, forgiving and hugging your brother creates some unique power on the air. Ethiopia and Eretria smiled together, the twin sisters. What a wonderful opportunity I witnessed! I cried a tear of joy. We never saw Mr. Esayas smiled on any media. I saw him laughing from his heart with Dr. Abiy our new PM. If you saw them how they were hugging each other, it seemed like Mr. Esayas found his lost son. Our PM was one of the youngest soldiers on Ethio-Eretria  war.

Reconciliation without any go-between looks like this.

What if North Korea and South Korea repeat this story, what if the nations who are in manufacturing nuclear bombs change their minds, …etc. We could have a better world.

This is the 21st century. We can sit down and discuss our differences around the table. “A man who slaps his wife’s face to show his superiority is very old fashion.” Every modern society agreed about it.

“But, showing the superiority of one nation over the other nation by owning largest or more dangerous arms is not yet old fashion. Is it?”

Hiroshima and Nagasaki’s story didn’t teach anything for some powerful people of these days.

Why people or nation fights to be superior? The only one who holds all power above all nation is ONE, THE CREATOR. Why people waste their energy in killing their own brothers, sister, mothers, fathers and their children to stay on power which they will never find? What amazes me is, THE PERSON WHO WANTS THAT DIGNITY NEVER BEEN TO WAR FRONT. HE SENDS OTHERS TO DIE FOR HIM, THEN HE CAN BE A HERO.

I wonder: “A man who came from a dust naked, and will go without a penny to unite his mother EARTH.” Why we plan evil to others? Why we go on a war to kill our own sister? Why we try to ruin others’ success? Why can’t we smile when others are happy? Why we kill fathers to make babies cry? Why we burn churches and kill the priests to embarrass Christians? Why we burn mosques and kill their members while they praying?

Knowing that, everybody will be paid according to his deeds at the end, why don’t we invest our money, energy and time to make some nations, families, people smile around us?

God bless my beautiful world.
