Queen of the Ethiopian ART.

Alemtsehai Wedajo is a author, poet, composer, wrote more than 400 lyrics and gave to more than forty famous Ethiopian singers. She wrote a drama and she also acts in many theatres. She was working in Ethiopian National Theatre since she was young.

We grew up singing the children songs she wrote and sang it with Ethiopian orphans. “Tsehayea Demekech”-( My sun shines brightly), “Selam Enishalen Egna Hitsanatoch”- ( We children need peace)…etc.

We have two songs which we sing them like a national anthem every time for peace and unity. Both are written and composed by Alemtsehay Wedajo. We always hear the musics and sing it, but nobody told us she was the writer. I just discovered this a week ago. Another female artist wrote it all on her FB page.

Alemtsehai was staying in America for 27 years. She fought for her country peace and unity with her pen. She founded Taitu Traditional Hall in America and Europe. (I wrote about Queen Tayitu, how tough, wise and fearless she was when our fathers fought with Italians). She opens a poem evening in America in a basement of some hotel, it is now held every time in the county’s Hall in Washington DC. She organized tutorial class for Ethiopian students in America and the students are good in their academics. She is very kind and generous in her stay there. She was visiting cancer patients, and others she works day and night to support her people.

Last Tuesday, she came back to Ethiopia to her mother land. Many artists went to the airport to welcome her. One elder and known artist came from Australia to welcome her, he worked with her in National theatre. famous TV journalists and another author and artist came with her from the US with same flight.

I went to welcome her and joined the crowd at Ethiopian National Theatre. All our old artists , famous singers, even old women and men we only know them on the movies, the famous musicians, almost every TV journalist with their camera were there.

The most heart touching part was this. Former Ziway orphans children, who sang those beautiful songs with her to us when we were kids, who are now Medical doctors, authors, musicians, business owners, parents of many beautiful children were there to welcome her by singing the same song “ Tsehayea Demekech”. Trumpets were blown by the art school students from Addis Ababa University. She had nothing to say, just crying. Many faces washed with tears.

Minister of Ethiopian Tourism Ministry was there to welcome her.

“I always say, “I’ll go to my country someday.” People used to think I won’t make it. I never allowed anyone to touch my hope in my life.” Said Alemtsehai in the middle of her speech.

I myself :

• Don’t allow anybody to plan for my future


• Don’t allow anybody to take away my dream


• Don’t allow anybody to tell me what is better for me


• Don’t give the leadership of my life to anybody

Here, our families, friends and bosses want to twist our arms and force us into a life we don’t want to try it either.

My sisters, I am asking you to be stubborn like I am today.

“If I live to make my brother’s dream for me true, who’ll live my dream?”

I can answer this. It’s hundred percent true- NOBODY will.
