Woman is powerful!!

Twenty years ago, my Mother had to walk for miles to get to a Post office if she had information to share. It took at least a week for that information to get to the intended recipient if they were within the country and a minimum of one month if they were abroad.
That meant that my Mother waited two months to get a response.
Today I can connect to millions of people at a click of a few buttons thanks to Web 2.0. What can be more exciting than that?
Web 2.0 has given me an opportunity to be heard and to listen to others, it has brought the whole world close to me, and it has made me powerful!
Through Web 2.0 applications like the social sites, I have joined communities like PulseWire that have given my voice a chance to be heard.
The Global Women Movement was in the past fragmented across regions because it was very expensive for women to frequently meet and brainstorm.
Those brilliant women of yesteryear tried their best to speak for the woman and to make things better for our generation but they seemed to be speaking with a voice that was barely audible and they had to enforce drastic measures (in Zambia taking off clothes in protest was not uncommon) to be heard.
Even though there has been a lot of success in women battles before the internet era, the coming of Web 2.0 has given the woman power to be what she wants, to do what she desires, to be a force to reckon with, Woman is powerful!
Personally, I can’t imagine a world without Web 2.0. This is part of the lifeblood of my daily life. I use it to work, to connect with other, to research and learn. I did not go very far with education, the web is my school. I use it to educate myself.
I have used the web to join communities like Gmedia which promotes Human Rights and Bantu Watch, the Zambian version of Ushahidi which we are using to monitor the September 20 elections.
I have attended several international fellowships and training through information that I gathered from the web. Without it, I will be less exposed to the world.
I have also used the web for economic gains through internet based part time jobs that have helped me when I was unemployed.
The web has enormously empowered me and I look forward to learning more of how I can use it for the benefit of the mother of the world, the woman!
