Soraya

There are movies you watch and forget. There are others that stay with you forever. The Stoning of Soraya is one movie I will never forget.

Are there words to fully express what is in my heart? That such evil exists in the world makes me wonder if the human race can be saved after all.

The film had been on my hard drive for about a month but I had been reluctant to watch it because of the title. I thought it was going to be too painful to watch.

It was too painful to watch. While I write this blog, I stare at my screen for moments because I do not know what to write. I don´t know if there are words to express my feelings. Extreme sorrow and pain are not quite what I feel now.

Soraya. She was innocent. What if she wasn’t? Was she supposed to die? Was she supposed to die the way she did? To be stoned by her own father? Her own children? And all for what? For smiling at a man? No one, whether man or woman, should die like this.

When I watched the movie I immediately went online and tried to find out more about her. The details were very sketchy. So I wonder what happened to her Aunt Zahra and her two daughters.

We cannot forget Soraya. Her story is too important. If we continue to share her story, she gets justice.
