Self Empowerment for family Sustainance

She married to a civil servant in one of the federal government parastatals, that entails, the husband will from time to time be transferred to different states and leaving her alone with the children for a long period of time. This came into reality in her life shortly after giving birth to her 5th child.

A civil servant's income is not always enough when the family is together maintaining one kitchen not to talk of when they are separated to have two kitchens since the man will be over there handling his own kitchen while the woman will be at home here with 5 boys handling a larger kitchen of the family, yet, it has to be so she bravely took up the challenge.

When the news of his transfer was broken to me, it met mix feelings within me, happy that he was counted worthy to be transferred to head a zonal office, and secondly, the feeling of what shall become of me and my children financially since the transfer has no financial backing. Then I said to myself, I must brave it. Life must go on well with me and my children. I gave my consent. On this note, I decided to empower myself.

When my husband left, I went and learnt how to make some household toiletries and laundry agents like: liquid soap, air freshener, antiseptic, disinfectant, liquid car wash, and liquid laundry soap.

After a few weeks of my training, I started production, I was carrying my products from office to office, from house to house, from one shop to the other. Some will accept me and some will reject me. This was combined with adequately taking care of the children.  In fact it wasn't easy.

With these efforts of mine, I discovered that the family was intact, the children were happy and well taken care of. My husband was not over stretched. The family was buoyant. My fears disappeared. I became very happy and marveled at what I was able to do. In fact, I give thanks to God.

I wish I can be empowered to industrialize this knowledge of mine so that  I can employ other women .

Throughout my husband's transfer,  I never cheapened myself before any man begging for arms, as to give room for intimidation or harassment, I raised my head high and maintained the dignity of my womanhood.

I urge every woman out there to look for something good doing around her, no matter how small, so that she can stand tall anywhere she finds herself, and be proud she is a woman.  Together we will make positive impact in our society.
