Introducing myself and my journal: Theatre for Women's Rights

About Me:
Price of Silence is a performing arts movement born out of the resounding silence in the face of one of the oldest, and largest human right's crisis in the history of human existence, that of the global struggle for women's rights. In 2010, after hearing a report of a village that was held hostage in the Congo, during which time women were repeatedly raped, two students at Lehman College in the Bronx, New York decided to write a show that combined dance, music, and acting, to relay the news, and illuminate how contemporary culture marginalizes the voices, and lives of women stuck in cycle of violence. The result was a show that artistically broke many theatre constructs, a sold out 600 person audience, and the first steps of an artistic movement. Price of Silence uses theatre to allow audience to move past the detached medium of television, and film, to create a holistic experience of witnessing, and participation, which is essential to creating a culture of human where human rights are the supposition for daily life, and concurrently promoting activism. Price of Silence's following continued to grow, and received many requests for more shows, and after a two year break, returned with a show that captured the hearts, and minds of audiences, bringing to life the culture of violence which dehumanizes women, while staging some of the horrific experiences of violence including human trafficking, domestic violence, and Indian gang rape crisis. Price of Silence believes that by bringing the humanity of people around the world to the stage, audiences no matter where the show s staged begin to identify with the performers, and actors, and develop a kinship, which is essential to fostering the solidarity of all people, beyond artificial boundaries, to bring about change. Price of Silence is made up a diverse collective of actors who come from different corners of the globe, with different culural backgrounds. Many of the members aside from being artists, have studied anthropology, sociology, psychology, politicial science, and women's studies, which they apply to their artistic outputs.

Price of Silence's long term goals is to provide a conduit of interaction between artistic experience, and information for activism, by linking audiences with NGO's. Price of Silence also has long term goals of teaching theater in the United States as a means to empower girls, and women, as well as to bring theatre to developing countries, as a means for women to find solidarity of experience and effort in which women can enterpenur economic autonomy, relay their stories and naratives, which promotes literacy, and education, and be an engine of cultural change, and empowerment.

Together, we will erect a theatrical grass roots movement in which all members of human society, from all walks of life, and diverging cultures, may find a home under the lights of hope. In the word's of the Ancient Greek playwright Aeschylus, we will: "tame the savageness of man and make gentle the life of this world."
