A New Hope

Web 2.0 is changing social media such that it will affect both communication and interaction. In early 2000 when I started producing talk shows it was difficult to get facts and contact guests, this today is less tedious and complicated.

One exciting thing about Web 2.0, is the rapid adoption of video sharing which gives an individual the ability to upload videos and information that others can share and comment, like Shekina’s story on ‘Breast Ironing in Cameroon’ posted on World Pulse site, thus promoting a cause that could bring about social change for the future.

Web 2.0 is not under the control of any individual, organization or institution unlike 1.0 where contents are managed by ‘Webmasters’. Web 2.0 creates a computing phenomenon where users play an important role in the internet experience as they can write, edit, publish and distribute personal materials online. The introduction of blogs allows anyone to publish their thoughts, opinions, ideas and projects for millions of people to view and comment often for free.

Some solutions I think Web 2.0 will bring includes breaking of communication gap between women as it proffers powerful ways to communicate with people around the world that can complement, strengthen community and advocacy thereby empowering women. It also brings about bonding as it is a tool that helps to educate and enlighten more women on their rights, network them as they come together to brainstorm on solutions, pose questions, test ideas, share successes and actions. This tool helps to encourage and embolden women to speak out when their rights are being trampled upon giving them opportunity to report their stories thus increase the safety of lives and properties.

Because this cuts across continents, borders and barriers there is no limit on how far the movement can go. The solutions are unlimited as more and more women over time will discover more things that can be done with this platform.

In all my years of media practice there has never really been a time I have participated this much in any group or organization as this. My recent participation in online activities and commenting on blogs is all attributed to Web 2.0.

This tool has made me more articulate, broadening my awareness about the happenings around my world. it will help me build my network, put my thoughts on paper, produce documentaries and post online for others to view, comment, critic and participate ultimately. Being a member of this network World Pulse is a result of the some of the benefits of Web 2.0 and there is no limit to how much I can learn and do with the this tool but I am taking it one step at a time.
