I open my eyes and everywhere is dark,
My heart beats in my ears and drowns away the night sounds;
The sand beneath my back feels coarse and wet,
Beads of sweat pool on my brow and run down my face.

I strain to turn on my side,
The pain is so intense, I shut my eyes again;
I clench my fists tight and the stones dig into my palm
But it is nothing compared to the pains I feel all over.

I had hoped that this was just a dream,
That when I open my eyes today I would be in my bed back in the dorm;
My mates would be pushing at my side to wake up,
Because it is time to prepare for the next paper.

But I am still here,
The other girls are still here;
I can still hear them trying not to cry out loud,
So that our captors do not come any closer.

When will we be rescued?
When will we be awakened from this terrible nightmare?
Everyday I fear I will be the next to die,
Everyday I fear that my punishment will finally take my life.

They had said that they cared about us,
But where are they now that we need them the most;
We are helpless and cannot free ourselves,
So we pray every night that tomorrow will be the day we go home.
