I find myself in mid-life, seeing the world through new eyes as I watch my first born head off to college and move on to his next life chapter. The world is presenting itself to me, and I am hoping to answer the call to take new steps, walk new paths, and shorten the spaces between me and the world.
I've been a video editor for most of my adult years. I started out in television news, editing the events of the day and communicating visually with my Denver, Colorado community. With young children, I shifted my focus to educational video, then, at age 40, went back to school to earn a master's degree in Journalism. That started my passion for documentary filmmaking, and also springboarded me into a full time position with a company that produces parenting and childbirth videos. Over the past couple of years, I've been shooting and editing videos about childbirth, women's health issues and family. It has helped me to realize the beauty of motherhood, of family connection and of women's health worldwide.
I first visited Africa in 2006, then took a second trip in the fall of 2007. Both times, I was there with camera in hand to document the culture and people that live vastly different lives than I do. Currently, I'm working on a film about gender issues in Zimbabwe, and am deeply interested in visitng other places where I can learn and share.
My next goal is to combine my personal love of video photography and international travel with my growing understanding of women's health issues. In the coming years, I hope to partner with an agency or non-profit that does work in other countries, particularly in the areas of women's health, childbirth, and community aid.
My second son is a freshman in high school this year, and I see myself spending the next four years anchoring myself close to home to support his needs (and my husband's), taking a few big steps on occasion. After that, I plan to put on my walking shoes and really begin leaving footprints around the globe on behalf of women's issues everywhere!
Filmmaking, education, supporting women's and children's issues, peacemaking, mothering, building community making the right choices when it comes to work, family, and the greater good. I often feel there's not enough of me. I am always seeking balance. Video photography, editing, graphics, production, childbirth education
My Vision for the Future
Traveling to rural areas around the globe, documenting and educationg through film.
