Sexual Violence: A Global Pandemic/29th April to 5th May 2018



Sexual violence is a global pandemic. One in three women experiences sexual or physical violence – most likely from their intimate partner, according to a report from the World Health Organization. There is an urgent need to increase sensitization regarding sexual violence and the awareness of consent and sexual violence amongst persons at large. In this series, we examine sexual violence and related issues that have come up in the news, on a weekly basis, published every Saturday. This is an attempt to improve awareness regarding incidents of sexual violence and related matters, so that we, as a society can take steps towards collective action to reduce its incidence. It is an effort to ensure that we acknowledge the rampant sexual violence that exists, lest we forget.



 



 



 



This issue looks at news from 29th April to 5th May 2018.



 



 



 



1) Actor Cosby and Director Polanski lose membership over charges of sexual assault



 



The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences found actor Bill Cosby guilty of drugging and assaulting around 60 women, and director Roman Polanski was arrested for raping a 13-year old female.



 



 



 



2) A 33-year old charged with enticing and raping a minor



 



Robert Taylor, a 33 year old man from Jefferson city, was found guilty of enticement of a 15-year old, followed by second-degree sodomy and rape. The sentence for the case is scheduled for the month of July.



 



 



 



3) Director Matabane accused over social media for sexual misconduct and rape



 



The “Nelson Mandela: the Myth and Me” director Khalo Matabane, from South Africa, was openly accused for sexual harassment, predatory behaviour, and rape by at least eight women. However, he denied the allegations and his legal team has clarified that he will reciprocate only to legal proceedings and will not be subjected to any social media trials.



 



 



 



4) Chef and restaurant owner accused of sexually assaulting a female employee



 



Michael John Noble, a 56-year old famous restaurant owner in Calgary was charged with sexually assaulting a woman employee in bathroom during a social gathering. A staff confirmed about the courage of the accuser to come forward immediately after the incident.



 



 



 



5) Haryana girls gang-raped, leading to suicide by one



 



Two incidents of gang-rape reported in this week, both of which happened in different districts of Haryana. A 16-year old girl, in Nuh district, was raped by eight men, who committed suicide after the incident. A 19-year old girl was deceived and gang-raped by five men in Gurugram. Medical examinations confirmed the event.
