Emerging Leaders: Lizzie Braganza

“Creativity has always been a part of my personalty and I am a graphic designer and an event planner by profession. Besides being creative my friends find me simple, funny, intellectual or rather, a nerd. Well, I am a movie buff too. I could watch an average of 6 movies per day.

I came to know about Safecity through Internshala. After reading a few articles online about Safecity I found the organisation to be really interesting and thought of applying for an Internship with Safecity. After watching a Youtube video of Elsa D’Silva who spoke about building safer communities in India on TEDx, I found the organisation’s goals to be really empowering and this, in turn, motivated me to take up the Graphic design internship with Safecity.

Well, I always enjoy designing for Safecity. The Youth Design Innovation Challenge Campaign was a beautiful project. Besides the Youth Design innovation Challenge Campaign Posters, I’ve also worked on #BeYourOwnSuperhero Campaign Designs. #BeYourOwnSuperhero Campaign was an innovative and an unique concept to work upon. Every design portrayed women as superheros who were not afraid to raise their voice against the wrong they faced. There were other posters that I worked upon such as the Tweet Chat Posters wherein various social issues faced by women were discussed over Twitter. The posters designed for the campaign helped me polish my designing skills under the guidance of Renita Siqueira. She gave me feedback about the designs all along the campaign and I must say she is a really good mentor.

During my internship, specially during the #BeYourOwnSuperhero Campaign I’ve learnt that if women discuss about the injustice they face with each other without being ashamed or afraid, speedy justice can be achieved. Sexual harassment is a universal problem, girls are taught to hush it all right from childhood. As they grow up they tend to be more vulnerable.

This internship has helped me learn and improvise my technical designing skills. I’ve also learnt about the various issues faced by women in today’s era especially India. Safecity has helped me grow, made me more inquisitive, helped me make better decisions. It has also taught me that personal safety is a right and no one has the right to snatch it away from you.”
