Mental Health and Women

On Friday, 12th Oct, Abdul Mufeez Shaheed @abdulmshaheed conducted a chat on Mental Health from a gendered approach to acknowledge two important international days that were celebrated during the week- World Mental Health Day and Day of the Girl.

The chat began by asking the participants some words or states that they associate with mental health problems which could be either positive or negative. We discussed the possibility of an association between mental health and increased risk of violence and how the circle of violence impacts one. While discussing mental health we also talked about the importance of having a supportive family and community to help people living with mental health problems and the many reasons that prevent people from seeking help to address mental health, especially women. The chat also covered the looming issue of depression among young adolescent girls and how social media was contributing to it. The participants shared information on public agencies and CSOs working in the area of mental health. The chat ended by asking the audience for suggestions on how each person can change mindsets around mental health and how it is viewed in a community or a nation due to factors such as culture, religion, socio-economic factors.
