Although I am portuguese, I was a Computer Engineering teacher at the National University of East Timor (UNTL) in 2007 and 2008. During the seven months I have remained in Timor, I became deeply attached with the young country and I had the opportunity to understand the needs perceived by the Timorese society. I have learned Tetum and I have travelled quite a lot in Southeast Asia. By getting involved with social development in Timor, I have gradually become more focused in micro credit and social entrepreneurship projects, more specifically the power of technology for the communications enhancement in isolated places, and women roles in these causes.
From that work I have developed a master thesis about the “Adoption of an e-Learning platform at UNTL”. This project is documented in an essay about the digital divide in far off places, the impact of change and the challenges that technology needs to face in those contexts. Professionally, it was a very positive experience in international development work and policy research, and also a kick off to start something new...
I have recently created a non profit, Moving Cause, that intends to promote and broadcast social entrepreneurship projects which are valuable and isolated, through technology enhancement. There are several projects Moving Cause wants to implement with women comunities, such as Bonecas de Ataúro and FetuLai.
Bonecas de Ataúro is a timorese social entrepreneurship initiative that has lead a group of women in creating a handcraft workshop where they develop original and creative pieces, actively generating value for the community they are in.
FetuLai vision is to give voice to timorese culture and handcraft through the creation of a female web development mini-cluster and it was awarded by an "HP Giveaway" campaign that intended to giveaway 6.000 USD in hardware and software.
