Catching them young

Beyond the classroom.
Beyond the classroom. (1/1)

I didn't set out to be a teacher. Never. Acting, Journalism, anything Media , was my passion. I eventually gained admission to University of Ibadan to study Theatre Arts , and my hatred increased. I visited Education department, I saw older women, few young ladies. People mocked them and gave them names. That drew me far from teaching.

Miracle do happen, people say. Yes, I believe. It happened during my Youth Service. I was posted to a polytechnic to teach. In few years, I was exposed to the challenges facing the youths beyond academics and at the end of that year, I have discovered that beyond, the classroom , the role of a teacher, goes beyond the classroom.

It is over thirty years in this noble field, I have taken a vow, empowered my self academically in this field, dedicate my life, resources, time, energy in building , impacting , supporting and loving these youths beyond the four walls of a school.  Nothing is a fulfilling and rewarding than catching them young !!!

Dear Stella,

I love your title, and especially your description of what a true teacher can do. "I have discovered that beyond, the classroom , the role of a teacher, goes beyond the classroom". This is what is possible, but it is not what many teachers embrace. It takes a special teacher, and you are clearly one. The young people whose lives you touch are truly lucky.

In sisterhood,
Tam

I love this post so much! I truly think teaching is the noblest of professions, and a profound way to bring change and positivity to this world. Young people are our future, and the classroom is where the future begins--both what is being learned, and how it is being taught. When I have the opportunity to teach students, I keenly feel the responsibility I have to honor that time with them and to be my best self.

Thank you for sharing this. Makes me think of this quote from Baba Dioum:

"In the end we will conserve only what we love, we will love only what we understand, and we will understand only what we are taught."

Blessings!

Dear Stella,
I am touched beyond words by your article. We have a lot in common. Like you, I never wanted to be a teacher. For a different reason though. At my ancestral home in Kolkata, Teaching is considered to be a family tradition. Almost everyone in my family is a teacher. Being the youngest as well as the black sheep of the family, I wanted to be anything but a teacher. But as luck would have it, I ended up being a teacher. Like you, I have been in this noble profession for close to three decades. I've been working for the Government of Bhutan all these years and it is a sheer bliss to be a teacher in this god-blessed country. The respect, love and adoration that teachers are treated with in this magical country, is something to be seen to be believed.
I cannot but agree more with you when you say that the teacher's role goes beyond the four walls. The task of nation building is totally entrusted to the teacher. For reasons best known to me, I feel very proud of you. Keep up the great work to touch many more hearts to make a difference.
God bless you. May all your efforts and endeavors be rewarded with success and satisfaction. With warm regards and love.
Sincerely,
R.N.Bhattacharjee
