There are many superstitions in Nepal which let women behind. For some people it might be the story of a film but it’s a real issue of women. When women give birth to a child, till 11th days women are far from their freedom. They are kept is separate small dark hut which is prepared specially to give birth to a child. After the pregnancy no other people are allowed to enter and talk with her. No one will be with her to share her feelings. Sometimes women are kept in a dirty cow shed.
They are not allowed to come out from the shed or hut. Not only in the pregnancy in almost every part of Nepal when menstruation happens women’s are not allowed to enter in the kitchen and cook food. Bed will be separate for menstruation women. They are not allowed to talk to the opposite sex not even with their brothers and father. No one will eat menstruation women’s touched food. If by mistake they touches the food, rest of their family members will scold at them and food will be threw away. It believed that if anyone of their family member eats that food it will be sin for a family. Not only the family, this is also believe from menstruation’s women.
These practices apply still in my village. I saw my neighbors aunts, sisters who believed and do not want to change their mind. When they came to know that these practices do not apply to my family, they started gossiping about us as a bad neighbor. Moreover, they believe that God will be angry with the family and if they didn’t follow these practices, their family will be suffering from natural disaster. If any incident happened in the future, when they came to know that somehow the food is touched by menstruation woman, they will blame them. Some years ago, a cow died from our shed but our neighbor gossip that it happen because we do not follow the same practice in our menstruation. My mother was also telling the same things but finally I and my sister convinced her.
Now a little changed had been came. Some people had already been started their voice against this practice and we can see some positive changes but still we can read many frustrated stories reports in newspaper and an internet about these practices. Hope one day we will remove this practice gradually from our community as well as from our nation and entire world which will bring the happiness to get the freedom to develop them.
