I'm a woman in love'

"I’m a woman in love" says Xthina-Avila, as I am about to wrap my interview of her. No, she is not talking about a man whom she met while pursuing her journalistic career that spans over 15 years or the three cats who share her apartment; rather an idea or more appropriately a concept, which caught her fancy and convinced her to leave a job that ensured a comfortable source of income after running the entire gamut, but left her soul emotionally battered.

Well, the cure lay in the abstract foundations of something called ‘Peace Journalism’. With the zeal of a new convert, Xthina tells me that it is necessary to highlight that this form of reporting should not be equated with “good news” or closing one’s eyes to reality. On the contrary, it allows a journalist to empathise and understand the situation at hand within it’s larger context and not just “inform” the viewer of the ongoing events taking place. It strives to balance the almost constant negativity of the mainstream media by putting emphasis on the positive aspects of the content and presents it as an alternative to the so called ‘reality’ so many of us are exposed to on an hourly basis.

After setting up her own website - www.corresponsaldepaz.org, which enabled an initial readership from almost 40 countries (spanning 5 continents)*, she is now working towards setting up an English version . Neither is the word count enough, nor does my description justify her potential but suffice it to say, this lady from Mexico is passionate about leaving people "inspired and not scared" of the world we live in today, and being a peace correspondent is one way of doing just that.

*Note: Due to the word limit (which I've crossed but tried unsuccesfully to stick to!), I would like to clarify that Xthina's website is read in 40 countries that span over 5 continents by people who speak or understand the Spanish language.
