THIS IS MY STORY

I became involve in humanitarian work in 2007 after I attended a program organised by a women’s’ group called “THE WIFE”. The group teaches women how to manage their lives as career persons, wives and mothers in the society. Then I needed guidance with my marriage and felt the organization will give me the solution I sort. When I became outlet coordinator and began to relate closer with the women; I realised that just like I did, some were allowing themselves to be abused by their spouses because of the traditional and cultural and religious beliefs within our society that has stereotype gender roles in favour of men. It was easy for me to free myself from this stereotype ideology because I had understanding family that were willing to help me through this period financially; unfortunately, most of these women had no one to run to for such help and were full time housewives. I began to contribute my quota by investing my savings into the lives of the abused and troubled women around me; I organize trainings on vocational skills in my area of specialization which is event/conference planning. I also work with likeminded women and organization on empowerment projects. I do this because I believe that when women are economically empowered, they will not only be able to say No to abuses but stand up to demand for justice when abused.
The need to speak out against the ills of gender abuse targeted at women/girls was such that I couldn’t ignore; as such I embarked on self development trainings and with my acquired knowledge on gender and community development, I began to advocate for behavioural change as a means of ending gender violence in our society. My advocacy is based on the need for a reorientation of the adult populace on respect and equality of rights; encouraging equality and respect among children from early age.
The above story led to the birth of TAT CENTER (TRANSFORMATION OF THE ABUSED AND TROUBLED FEMALE. While relating with women of similar interest on gender issues, I met Tosin Oladosun who introduced me to the activities of “WORLDPULSE”. I joined the campaign group last year and got to hear of the “VOICES OF OUR FUTURE” program.
I believe in Nigeria. I believe that it will be better only if we embrace transformation: I believe there can be a gender violence free society where women are not discriminated against and are allowed to enjoy equal opportunity and rights: A world where their voices can be heard in proffering solutions to the world problems.
