OCCUPY NIGERIA:LAGOS STOOD STILL

Initially it was as though the proposed strike would not take place, but with time people gathered in groups discussing the possibility of the strike. From Oshodi-Abeokuta Expressway through to Ikorodu road people waited and prepared for how to participate in the protest. Along the Ikorodu rod from Maryland-Anthony-Palmgrove-Onipanu, people were waiting as the roads were empty and free of vehicular movement apart from media organisation that drove through taking shots and interviewing people. In Yaba area where the Labour House was the mobilising point for the protest, the popular Yaba market was closed as business activities were paralysed but people gathered around discussing. Inside the streets in Shomolu area youths turned the roads to football pitch as they played football on the streets and shops were under lock and key.
The Organised Labour Union, Civil Society Groups, Student Union among others led the protesters through Ikorodu road with protesters chanting different songs of solidarity and people carrying placards with inscriptions like JONATHAN SUBSIDY YOUR ADMINISTRATION EXPENSES RATHER THAN FUEL SUBSIDY, DON’T TRUST A MAN WITHOUT SHOE, TACKLE BOKO-HARAM, among others. Most protesters called out on some people who stood along the road as on-lookers to join in the protest to fight against the administration of President Good luck Jonathan who has decided to wage a war against the poor and down-trodden. The protesters marched all through to Ojota where the main rallying point was in the Gani Fawehnmi Park. The crowd in Ojota was like a crusade ground as lots of people from all works of life were there as different activists, artistes addressed the crowd. The crowd was so overwhelming with people chanting different songs and calling on the Government to reverse the price of fuel or face a revolution that would be a child's play compared to Libya, Tunisia and Egypt.
There were ambulances on ground with doctors and other medical personnel available to attend to any casualty, also the police became on-lookers as the people were advised to protest peacefully without giving room for any violent actions. The whole of Ojota bus-stop was crowded with people and media organisation stationed with their broadcasting vans for live transmission, among which were AIT, CHANNELS. Foreign media present included REUTERS, CNN, AL-JAZEERA, CFTV, AP, and BBC among others.
The protesters vowed to continue protesting until there is a reversal in the price of fuel, cut in the cost of governance, increased level of security across the country. But also as the protest was going on some people were making good business selling water, drinks, recharge cards, some found and renewed contacts with old friends, took pictures with celebrities that came out in solidarity. The questions is how long would this protest last, will the people be able to sustain it, will President Jonathan listen to the people on stock to his gun? Only time will tell.
