Saving Lives at Birth!

Did you know that every day 800 women die in child birth? I was blown away when I first heard this. I thought to myself, I have to do something about this! I teach women and girls all over the world how to do their family planning with cycle beads. Last year I taught girls attending a highschool for pregnant teens about family planning using cycle bracelets, necklaces and free period tracker apps. Unfortunately to the disappointment of many of the pregnant girls the free period tracker app only worked for smart phones. I decided do some research to see if I could find period tracker apps for non smart phones. I was disappointed to learn that there are none. Hard to believe because today everyone has a cell phone, even the poor. Except the poor do not have smart phones. As such they miss out on a lot. Undeterred I started blogging techies all over the world in search of help. Very few responded but I reached out to one group called Instedd who offered to provide me with the backbone necessary for to write my own period tracker app. And guess what? The SMS version works even better than the smart phone version! My dream is to give impoverished girls in developing countries the opportunity to have a tech job by writing their own SMS period tracker apps so they can help the women and girls from their local communities do their family planning. Without family planning they miss out on so much; their youth, their education, their livelihood and their dreams.
