It is so wonderful to read about women who are economic earners and the main pillars of support for their families for many decades. The stories you featured on the individual women in your link adequately demonstrates the power women can wield if given an opportunity to be who they can be. I am especially impressed by their determination not to allow the government to construct a modern supermarket on their current structure. While I have absolutely no bias against modernization and advanced technology, the fact remains that many traditions (in Asia, Africa and elsewhere) have been sacrificed in society's bid to be technologically caught up with the rest of the world. Not all traditional values are bad or backward and it is especially gratifying to see women like those profiled in this article stand up for what they truly believe in and have known for all these centuries. May God bless these women:The Torchbearers, the Sisters of the All Woman Market in Manipur "Ima Keithel"!

    Hi Urmila,

Thanks so much for sharing this - not only is it a reminder that things have and (hopefully) will continue to get better, but also a lovely glimpse of the lives of the women running the show. Keep up the great writing!

    Best,

    Hi Umila,

Ima Keithel is an example of how people together make something happen that never could on one's own. As I read the article and viewed your pictures, I so wanted to be able to hear the sounds, smell the scents, and see the vibrant colors of the market.

The article said that today this new structure is the new face of old Ima Keithel and one of the biggest tourism destinations of Manipur. Though it could happen that a chain market comes in and in effect replaces Ima Keithel, the women vendors will hold within them a vital strength that they will share in all that they do moving forward.

"The market is a society, an institution, a way of life" - wonderful!

Thanks for sharing this very interesting and inspiring.
