An auto rickshaw in India
  • An auto rickshaw in India

I have never bought myself anything expensive. But it was soon going to change. I saved to buy a purse and happily sang in my heart as I headed home after purchasing it. In the rain, in my hurry to get back home I left behind my precious, much-awaited purse in the auto.

One hour later, in my kitchen as I cooked dinner, I was beginning to recollect the conversation I had with the man who drove the auto today. He asked me, 'What do you do? ' I said, 'I work for very poor and unfortunate people.' He was scolding a eunuch in the traffic junction, and I pointed and said, 'Look, they are the ones I work for.And I love them, each one of them.' He just looked at me.

The door bell rang. My brother attended to it. He walked into my kitchen and said, "Did you buy a new purse and left it behind? A man just came and returned it for you."

I was so happy that moment. My eyes filled with tears. This happiness was much deeper than the kind I felt with the purse.

PS: This is not an article. Its an experience that occurred today and I want to share with each and every sister on World Pulse and every person who has given up .

Perhaps your purse would have been lost forever had he not asked you what you did, and then scolded the eunuch. From a moment of annoyance was borne a moment of kindness. That single moment has changed the driver forever and you never know, maybe he stops before scolding a eunuch again and maybe he tells your story to other drivers. It only takes one moment of compassion to change the world. Thanks for being that change agent.

Much love, Janice

Dear Janice,

I believe you my sister- it just takes one moment in time to change the way we think and lead our lives. Last year in the month of October I was on an India trip, working with the Water and Sanitation Collaborative Council (UN Body) and Arghyam .and had the opportunity to go to remote parts of my country to observe the living conditions of people. In one such instance, I met two children below 4 years of age who demonstrated such joy in living and forwardness to interact with me, a stranger. I spent few hours with the children, and how I cherish those memories. In that moment I saw their tattered clothes and abject poverty had not dampened their spirit!!!!

That observation made me to give up a lifestyle. I gave up fashion, senseless shopping and fretting over to be in vogue. I wish someone would go tell the two children how they changed me forever!

I believe what you just said, my sister.

Dear sister Janice,

Can we continue the discussion we had over resources and which project to invest on? I have been waiting to hear from you on that.
