Nigeria Women seeks for Justice

Tears roll down my cheek and pain engulfed my whole body as I watched women on television weeping over the death of their children who had been killed in the just concluded Presidential election which the international and domestic observers tagged as the most credible election in the history of Nigeria.

I weep for these young brains that left their homes, their families, their friends and loved ones to serve their father’s land in the state they are deployed to serve for one year. Oh! They never returned backed home to meet those them left. What a pity! What a life! I weep also for my country Nigeria…………where do we go from here.

Oh! poor youth corpers who will wipe away the tears of the women who swept the streets, fried akara, roasted corn, yam, plantain, who sold wares in the market, who will wipe their tears when their precious children for whom they toiled day and night, under the sun and in the rain are snatched by the cold hands of death! Children they hoped will help them out of the poverty they had eaten, slept in, woken up to all their lives. Young, energetic, industrious, lively, and selfless corpers serving their father’s land were murdered in the most dishonored manner ever.

Recalling the 4 - 5 years in the University, the sleep night to read and struggles to pass out of school with a comprising result and the joy of being a graduate, all cut short by their fellow citizens. The painful aspect of it, is that those ‘amagiris’ as they are fondly called are little boys who may not know the worthy of education and the value of life.

The numbers alleged to be killed by the media could be more than the actual figure and many are still to be found either dead or alive. The stories of how most of them were killed and some raped is outrageous, I refused to believe the story of a girl that was cut into half from her waist which many saw on facebook.

This incidence has already instilled fear in other corps members all over the country and their families. Nigeria youths believe the NYSC Scheme has failed that and should be scrap off or should be re-structured. One of the aims of NYSC is to bring about National Unity in the country and exposed youth to other cultures and ways of life of other tribe of Nigeria. It also assists the young graduate to have a working experience and this has been very useful to so many graduates. Some have been retained after service year at their place of primary assignment and some have even found their spouses and settle in the state of service. Scrapping NYSC is not a good idea but government should put good measure in place and re-structure the policy with corps member’s protection and security as the paramount wherever they are posted.

Concerned Nigeria Women are calling on the President for Justice and compensation to the families of the victims. No amount of money given to the family can equate a life, this is why I think the victims themselves deserve honor, appreciation, remembrance and should be taken as Democratic Heroes of Nigeria. Their names should be listed on the history book of Nigeria and be remembered the same way we have honoured past leaders and also declare a day of honour for them.
