Supreme Court of Maldives – nullified the entire election of a country!

The Supreme Court annulled the elections outcome of 7 September 2013 and now calls for a fresh ballot to be held on 20 October 2013. This is the craziest thing that can ever happen. The process for an evolving democracy has been thwarted by the Supreme Court of Maldives.

Four judges of a 7 member panel (4:3 verdict) decided that 5600 votes cast in on 7 September 2013 were tainted to determine the qualified run-off candidates. This is just absurd and not justified when the international and local organisation that monitored the process stated that the election process went smoothly.

The businessman Gasim Ibrahim, who is adamant to be the next president, demanded that the results of the election be annulled. This demand was supported by the Abdullah Yameen (brother of former president Gayoom) the candidate of Progressive Party of the Maldives (PPM).

The above actions put together raise questions in regard to the credibility and validity of the decision of the majority (4 people) who voted to annul the results. This also creates doubt in one’s ability of reasoning. It promotes our reservation to believe in the organisations who affirmed that the elections went in order.

Who are we to believe now? Can we trust the people who implement the law and justice? In who’s interest are they working?

I would like remind the Maldivian authorities (Muslims) who are currently making decision for the people to heed the warning in Surah Al Nisa, 4:135 below;

“O you who have believed, be persistently standing firm in justice, witnesses for Allah , even if it be against yourselves or parents and relatives. Whether one is rich or poor, Allah is more worthy of both. So follow not [personal] inclination, lest you not be just. And if you distort [your testimony] or refuse [to give it], then indeed Allah is ever, with what you do, acquainted”

These recent events further confirms that Maldives is ruled by a few powerful dictators who do not value humanity, justice, dignity and the wellness of the society.

Any action for a presidential election will have to be held in time for the new president can take office by the deadline 11 November 13. A new President must be in office by the deadline set by the 1978 constitution that ended 30-year one-party rule by former president Maumoon Abdul Gayoom.

This annulment has totally ignored the voice of 45.45% of the Maldivians and only listened to the rich elites of the country.

Transparency International has also expressed ‘grave concern’ for the safety of the volunteers working in Maldives. There have been negative campaigns in the media aimed to undermine the anti-corruption work of Transparency Maldives.

Death threats and street attacks are also now prevalent in Male’ and it is becoming a hostile place for its citizens. I am still holding to the light at the end of the tunnel!
