To Ms. Bachelet: May UN Women Make a Piercing Statement

Dear Ms. Bachelet,

It has been fear, for so long now, that has led to the de-valuing, the violence and the inequality against women. Fear of the unknown. Fear of what we cannot control. Fear of change.

I agree that this is a time of great promise. Because we have seen how fear distorts what we truly hold valuable. And critical masses are now waking up and saying we do not like what we have seen. Indeed, we are ripe for a new way. My hope is that UN Women will not only be a leader in this emergent thinking, but that utilizing it’s powerful position, will burst forth on the international scene in a way that induces a complete cracking open of consciousness.

It has been said that if one woman told the truth about her life, the world would split open. Though I was not outwardly oppressed growing up in the United States, I know how the inward life of a woman becomes bound. How we twist ourselves into pretzels to be heard in a world that cannot hear the way we speak. How we use force when really we have a natural trust for life, we compete when really we see the value in cooperation, we follow the script instead of our intuition. And we continue to live in the illusory world where what I do doesn’t affect you, when really we know better. We know the truth of our connectedness.

I would urge that UN Women make a piercing statement to the world by allowing for the splitting open of the old model and becoming a living example of a balanced entity, where feminine capacities can flourish alongside the masculine, where power means using your gifts, whether tangible or intangible, for the highest good.

We are faced with an extraordinary opportunity to not only bring equality to the forefront, but to empower women everywhere to trust their deepest knowing. When women across the globe tap into their own inherent wisdoms, they will find freedom despite their circumstances and will collectively bring forth a goodness that we cannot even currently envision.

Imagine a world where every woman rises. May you, in your new position as Executive Director of UN Women, hold tenderly this vision. Ensure that all initiatives accelerating equality also re-mind women of their inner goodness, beauty and truth.

Sincerely,
Carrie Lee Ferguson
