The ICC Prosecutor is here…

The International Criminal Court (ICC) prosecutor Louis Moreno-Ocampo has arrived in the country today. His mission is to seek justice for 2007 post election chaos perpetrators.

During his three-day visit to Kenya, he is expected to meet President Kibaki and Prime Minister Raila Odinga to ask them refer this case to the Hague (International Criminal Court) after the government failed to form a local tribunal to try post poll perpetrators.

The government was given September 30th 2009 as the deadline to form a local tribunal, which they failed to agree on. The post election violence suspects include government ministers and key personalities in the business world.

Earlier on, Ocampo had warned Kenya and said if the case is referred to the ICC, ‘Kenya will serve as an example to the rest of the World’. This was Kenya’s worst post poll violence that left over 1000 people dead and about half a million people homeless.

Ocampo’s visit comes just weeks after peace-broker and former UN Secretary General Koffi Annan’s visit to push for reforms in Kenya.

Meanwhile, Kenya’s long serving Attorney General Amos Wako has been banned from the US. The US Department, through the top U.S. diplomat for Africa, Johnnie Carson, announced the visa ban two weeks ago, said the government official who was not named at the time, has been an obstacle to reforms. But it is now official; the AG’s visa has been revoked permanently.

Carson says the reforms are important to prevent the repeat of 2007 post poll chaos and to cut down corruption scandals in the country. He said he is targeting 15 more prominent personalities seen as anti-reformists.

Wako has served as Kenya’s Attorney for 18 years now.
