Introducing myself and my journal

About Me:
I am a Nigerian-based journalist with a bias in developmental journalism.
In the course of my journalism career which spans over 15 years, I have had a short stint as an Art Editor/ Feature Editor of the defunct The DEMOCRAT newspaper, and also reported extensively on the general beat namely: Health/Science, Environment, Agriculture, Aviation, Tourism, Energy and Extractive Industry, Features, News, etc.

Currently, I am an Associate Editor, NEW NIGERIAN WEEKLY, one of the stables in the New Nigerian Newspapers Limited, an organisation established in 1966 by Late Sardauna of Sokoto, Sir Ahmadu Bello, in northern Nigeria. I'm also into training and mentoring of young journalists on reporting development issues. I serve as a communication consultant to Partnership for Transforming Health System(PATHS 2), Kaduna State office. PATHS 2 is a DFID programme.

As a mid-level career journalist, groomed on the finer points of journalism, which is objectivity, credibility, equity, and justice, I deign to admit that the future of journalism in my country may not be guaranteed on those ethoses any more than the practitioners themselves are willing to admit.

At the risk of been accused of making vacuous pontificating, I can say with every sense of responsibility that with a few exceptions, the role models in the profession which majority of us used to look up to for guidance and direction appear compromised one way or the other to the extent that the practice is not only been sacrificed at the altar of mercantilism but this ugly development negates the noble cause of the profession which prides itself as society’s watch dog.

All hope is however not lost. Like the proverbial phoenix, Nigeria’s journalism which has been mired in endemic corruption and under the vice grip of wicked interlopers, can still rise from the hashes to reclaim its lost glory as the last hope of the common man.

I hold the view, and very strongly too that the training would afford yours sincerely a perfect learning experience judging by the different levels of interfaces, discussion forums, cross fertilization of ideas from the good breed of experts and professionals expected as resource persons, hence this application.
