Lost in 'secret Vrindavan'

The theme of my module 2 assignment - 'Widows of India : A Tale Of Double Misfortunes', inspired me to do a multimedia story on them.

In India, being a widow remains one of the worst stigmas. Their social isolation, accusation of being 'responsible' for their husbands' death and violence experienced by them has attracted little attention worldwide. Reading about their plight definitely saddened me, but I decided not to stop there. I wanted to show the world how a widow of rural India is expected to renounce all the earthly pleasures and accept a life of penance and misery.

Therefore, my multimedia story is an attempt to create awareness and raise consciousness about their plight, who the society has forgotten. I hope my film is watched and listened to by people everywhere, and helps to change the lives of all the widows.

The photo attached here is of a 65-year-old strong, independent and empowered widow. I met her while doing my story and found out that after her husband's death, she decided to take over his small shop of artifacts and run it herself. Though she is fortunate to be able to do that, not all widows share her fate.
