Us and the Web 2.0

A little spider spun a web. As time passed, the spider grew its reach and attracted bugs of all kinds. Mesmerized by the glittering network of threads, they got caught up in it. They called for help and as friends from all over came to their aid, they too became entangled. They shared ideas about how to solve their problem. Soon, they became nourishment for the spider, giving their lives so another could thrive. This cooperation is the Web 2.0, a place where people are captivated by the spellbinding invisible structure before them and never leave. Instead, we join, we share, we form, we seek, we hear, we speak… eventually we give back to the community we’ve chosen to be a part of.
The Web 2.0 is our river to new frontiers. The ramifications are endless and interconnectivity the outlet, presenting a myriad avenues for self-expression and feedback. Writing, video, audio or images, it is the ultimate platform. For the women’s empowerment movement this platform is a promise. No need to ask permission or approval, no more competing with men for limited airwaves or newspaper columns, no requirements of titles, status or education for us to speak our truths and be heard. No more waiting for an opportunity that may never come. Here, WE ARE the boss and we say to ourselves, “yes I have a voice that needs to be heard, I am an agent of change, and I can be a trustworthy source even without a degree, because what I have inside me cannot be copied, bought or sold, instead I share it.” For women, this outlet provides the tool to shed light on OUR issues and the issues ignored by the male dominated mainstream media. The fire burns for us and we are coming from near and far to hover around it, feel it’s warmth, and tell our stories.
On the grand scale, the Web 2.0 has the ability to educate and promote international interaction, mutual understanding, cooperation, compassion and peace. On a personal level (where it all begins), there’s a benefit that is as inspiring as it is empowering. Our lives are transformed when receiving outside support. A hug can have an impact on our emotional state, leading to positive effects on our health and other social interactions. Virtual support can be as beneficial when given with sincere kindness. After joining WP, I was ELATED by the outpouring of support. This may not be much, but like for anyone, my emotional state dictates the state of my condition. See… I have epilepsy. Maintaining happiness through injections of support and inspiration from the web has become essential for my wellbeing - firing an arsenal of good chemicals that protect me, and my brain. The knowledge I’ve gained, connections I’ve made, and inspirational advice I’ve culled from research online have improved my condition. I could not have done it without all the people I found on this journey through the beautiful lacework that makes up the Web 2.0.
