Documenting Violence against Women in Cambodia

Stirring The Fire founder Phil Borges, a social documentary photographer and filmmaker, has been using media as a tool to raise awareness about human rights for the last 25 years. Through Stirring The Fire we are using multimedia to highlight non-profit organizations that are making strides towards gender equality, mostly in the developing world.

We currently have a team in Cambodia documenting two organizations working to end violence against women and they are sending us updates from the field! (www.stirringthefire.org/blog)

The organizations Phil and the STF team are documenting are the Cambodian Acid Survivors Charity (CASC) and Youth Star. With support from the UN Trust Fund to End Violence against Women CASC assists women survivors of acid violence to receive justice and to rebuild their lives and Youth Star enlists Cambodian university graduates for a year-long volunteer service in an education and youth-led mobilization program to address domestic violence.

You can follow our team as they interview acid attack survivors, visit the operating room to document surgeries with CASC and follow student volunteers to their villages to see what prevention strategies they implement to address domestic violence with Youth Star.
