The WFAC Buea Workshop Concept.
In a related development, analysis of the data collected in a questionnaire completed by 522 female students and the voluntary testing of 108 sexually active females for HIV, syphilis, Chlamydia and gonorrhea indicated the prevalence of these diseases amongst the participants tested were 3.9%, 6.1%, 24.1% and 30.1%, respectively.. (African Journal of AIDS Research (AJAR), 2007)

Furthermore, a situational analysis of 300 questionnaires conducted by WFAC –Buea (2009) to find out the percent of female and male student (age: 15 -25) with a basic knowledge in addressing the female condom use barriers indicated only 3.3 % had a basic understanding on the right base approach, with 2.6% being female and 0.6% being the male student. Coupled with the general misconceptions and stigma surrounding the use of the female condoms, many of the female students testified that they were willing to use a female condom if sensitized on the right approach.

It is therefore for these reason, WFAC Buea concludes that relatively high prevalence of STIs among female students in the University of Buea stems from inadequate knowledge of the major modes of STI/HIV transmission and inadequate use of preventive methods. The WFAC Buea Workshop 2010 will therefore be a break through to improve and reverse the STIs and HIV prevalence rate among the University students, as it improves on their reproductive rights.

WFAC Buea Workshop 2010 aims, among other things, to:

  • Sensitize students on how to use the female condoms

  • Increase Female students knowledge on current prevention options to fight HIV/AIDs besides the male condoms.

  • Encourage University groups in using advocacy as a tool to mainstream the use of female condoms into their activities.

  • Progressively meeting the Universal Access to Female Condoms, UAFC, goals.
