When joining remember the top five ways to stay safe online

  1. Consider using an alias (pen name) for your username if you are in a country or personal environment that punishes free speech. It can be your name, a nickname or if you have potential security issues, use a name that you can remember but can't be directly connected to you.
  2. Be aware that using a public internet café puts you at a higher risk for surveillance and having your accounts infected with spyware. Spyware is software that can record your key strokes and passwords without you knowing. Always bring your own laptop if possible, and never leave it unattended!
  3. Create strong passwords and change them often. A strong password is hard to guess, but easy for you to remember without writing it down.
    • A strong password is at least 8 characters or more.
    • A mixture of UPPERCASE and lowercase letters, and numbers.
    • Includes at least one special character, such as !@#?%
  4. Never post your personal contact information in your public journal.
  5. Always log out before leaving

With these tools you can take steps to protect your safety without compromising your bold voice. If you see community members posting personal contact information in their journals, please contact World Pulse and we will alert them to the risks.
