To Where and What Will Women Lead?

I was in the generation of women in the USA who reached the age of majority while chaos reigned in my country. My primary and high school years saw the dismanteling of all boundaries that had, until then, formed our United Staes of America's society. The Christian religion, so prevalent in my country, was forever changed by the Vatican Council; our president was murdered; human rights were expanded to include those that my parents had treated like slaves; the taking of our sons, fathers and brothers in forced armed forces drafts was discontinued; birth control became readily available and effective.

Many of we women walked out of oppressive relationships, without any idea where we would end up. We only knew that nothing we did, from there on out, could be set on "automatic." We had to reinvent ourselves and our society. We still have not defined the new boundaries, only knowing what we don't want for ourselves and our future generations.

This song by Helen Reddy and her male co-author Ray Burton became the anthem of many women of my era:

"I am woman, hear me roar

In numbers too big to ignore And I know too much to go back an' pretend 'Cause I've heard it all before And I've been down there on the floor No one's ever gonna keep me down again

Oh yes, I am wise But it's wisdom born of pain Yes, I've paid the price But look how much I gained If I have to, I can do anything I am strong (Strong) I am invincible (Invincible) I am woman

You can bend but never break me 'Cause it only serves to make me More determined to achieve my final goal And I come back even stronger Not a novice any longer 'Cause you've deepened the conviction in my soul

Oh yes, I am wise But it's wisdom born of pain Yes, I've paid the price But look how much I gained If I have to, I can do anything I am strong (Strong) I am invincible (Invincible) I am woman

I am woman watch me grow See me standing toe to toe As I spread my lovin' arms across the land But I'm still an embryo With a long, long way to go Until I make my brother understand

Oh yes, I am wise But it's wisdom born of pain Yes, I've paid the price But look how much I gained If I have to, I can face anything I am strong (Strong) I am invincible (Invincible) I am woman

I am woman I am invincible I am strong I am woman I am invincible I am strong I am woman"

A society with no defined boundaries lives in fear of falling off the earth or becoming lost in the chaos. If religion and history are not to be the patterns for leading our earth into the future, to whom and what will we look for guidance?  It is now up to all of we women and our allies around the world to decide what we want for our shared earth, and how to get there.

We women of World Pulse who have been accepted into the Leadership Group have a sacred calling and responsibility to help define a path forward and the milestones by which we measure our progress to a more sustainable earth. I invite all of my fellow WP sisters to look deeply into your own spirit and the spirits of your ancestors to find and share what is good about your own history and learned value system. What better forum can we have to share our ideas about reshaping our earrth's community of homo sapiesn than World Pulse?
