The media affect us all, from how we view ourselves to how we understand the world around us. At the same time, we have the power to use media to impact the world. This is an opportunity to tell a story about the role of the media in your life.

Here are some ideas to get you started:

Media and power
  • Tell a story about the media’s impact on you or your community, for better or for worse.

  • There are so many tools now to spread information (and misinformation). What kinds of media have you seen be particularly effective? Have you encountered a story that changed your perspective on an issue?

  • Are you a media creator? Have you harnessed the power of media for good? Tell us about it!

Media and representation
  • Do you see yourself and your identities represented fairly in the media? If not, what needs to change?

  • Share a story about imbalances you’ve observed in the media you consume. Do you see certain topics underreported or overreported? Who gets to tell the story and which sides of the story get told?

  • Does the imagery used in common media reflect your reality? If not, how would you like to see yourself and your communities represented?

  • Media show and tell: You can share examples you’ve encountered of the media getting it right or getting it really wrong. What can we learn from these examples?

Media and freedom
  • What is the media environment in your country or region? Can journalists do their jobs and can ordinary citizens speak out freely?

  • From free press struggles to net neutrality, what are the most urgent media issues in your community? Share your challenges and share your vision.

By sharing our stories and visions for free and fair media, together we can shape the media to reflect our voices.
