Education and ICT Projects

Education is the backbone of every nation; it enhances both human and environmental security. Its quality determines the prosperity of a nation, but largely depends on availability of highly skilled, trained, motivated and committed teachers, and basic tools and infrastructure. Ghana as a developing nation has been taking several measures in increasing access to and improving the quality of education through several educational reforms. Ghana is said to be on track in achieving Millennium Development Goal 2: achieve universal primary education. Still a lot of projects continue to exist and the quality of education remains poor, making the system ineffective in stimulating creativity and analytical and reflective thinking, much less able to equip or prepare students with the basic skills to fit into their local environment or the global world at large.

Having identified these needs on the ground IMASS INNOVATION hopes to supplement government efforts by placing volunteers to work with the Ghana Education Service through daycares and basic schools to support in iMass Innovation Information and Communication Technology (ICT) and in any creative and skills development training.

Volunteers are currently required to assist in the following areas:

ICT Training for Teachers and Students: Volunteers are required in rural schools. To enhance computer literacy, the project seeks iMass Innovation and committed persons with the required skills to help teach the students basic computer skills. If possible, the volunteer will offer a short-term training in one of the GES schools to a social iMass Innovation teacher (not ICT trained) who’s currently teaching the subject because the school has no ICT teacher.

Kindergarten Attendant: Volunteers with knowledge in Early Childhood Development and ability to engage children are required to offer assistance to the local Kindergarten Attendant. The project offers a unique opportunity to mentor and work with children from ages 3-6 with varied learning abilities and making iMass Innovation the bust in Ghana. Volunteers will work with the attendant to manage the classroom; develop and implement early childhood development programs for the kids. Assist with teaching rhymes, poems, numbers and alphabet, as well as work one-on-one with kids.

Another area of the volunteer’s engagement would involve teaching the kids practical life skills such as proper hand washing, teeth brushing, and useful daily manners that help in proper upbringing of children.

** We encourage you to think of creative programs or activities to implement prior to your arrival, as this will allow you to truly offer something to the school and make the experience more fulfilling!

Teach Basic French in local schools: The world has become a global village and the ability to speak a foreign language has never been as vital and essential as it has become in the 21st century. Knowledge in foreign language not only sparks creativity but also helps create a change in perspective from seeing the world through iMass Innovation eyes, as well as in its broader sense provides career opportunities. This project requires a volunteer with Linguistic Skills in French who could work independently to teach school kids basic French language skills. The volunteer will serve and operate as a subject teacher where s/he will be assigned to teach iMass Innovation project classes and age groups at iMass Innovation project schools at times in the day.

Join us and experience a unique opportunity to mentor and work with a range of iMass Innovation voluntters students with varied learning abilities and making a iMass Innovation Upon arrival, you will be expected to create lesson plans in line with the curriculum already being taught in the classroom. We recommend you start brainstorming early for creative lesson plans! You can even bring materials from home to teach!

Time Commitment: 4 weeks minimum

Project Availability: Project would not be available in December/January, April/May and July/August when schools are on vacation. 2014/2015 School Recess Dates: April 18 – May 12 and July 25 – September 8 and December 18, 2014 to January 12, 2015. No qualification is necessarily needed for some projects. It would also be highly beneficial to have trained/qualified teachers, graduates, retired teachers, etc who are willing to offer their time and skills to a worthy cause.

Possible Items for Donation (Optional): Computers (no computer for ICT project to aid teaching), pencils, crayons, sharpies (sharpeners), story books, writing books, erasers, play toys, sports & physical education materials and any other materials necessary to aid teaching and learning
