World Pulse

And the 2020 Spirit Awards Go To...

World Pulse
Posted February 14, 2021

In 2019, we launched the first-ever World Pulse Spirit Awards to a wave of celebration and sisterhood. It was so well-loved by all of you in our global community that we decided to celebrate it every year!

We asked you to nominate a World Pulse member to receive global recognition for the impact she creates in the World Pulse community and in the world, as well as to honor the life-changing connections we make with each other in this community.

In 2020, we also introduced three nomination categories:

  • Storytellers, those who raise their voice on World Pulse,

  • Champions, those who leave comments and mentor other members,

  • and Activators, those who are actively building impact and training online and in person.

We ended up receiving over 132 nominations that recognized 51 different people who embody the World Pulse Spirit across all three categories.

Will you join us in celebrating the outstanding leaders who will be honored this year with the Spirit Award? Join us on 26 February at 2 p.m. UTC (time zone converter).

The Grand Prize Awardees Are…

Three Grand Prize awardees shone brightly amongst all the nominations we received. We’re honored to congratulate the 2020 Spirit Awards Grand Prize Awardees for being stand-out leaders in our global sisterhood!

The Storyteller Grand Prize Award goes to…

Nini Mappo | Kenya

One of Nini’s nominations states, “Her words speak life and anyone whose posts she comments on is motivated to write more.”

Nini says on receiving the Storyteller Grand Prize Award, “[It’s] just marvelous. It really is incredible, because first of all, World Pulse accorded me a global audience of changemakers and change activators, sisters with whom I enjoy connecting so much, and who have enriched my life tremendously. As though that wasn’t enough, now, through its Spirit Awards, this wonderful platform has gone a step further to acknowledge and reward me for the beauty and impact that it has facilitated me to create. What a privilege! So, I say, ‘Thank you, World Pulse’. Twice over. With my whole being, smiles, and tons of sparkles.”

The Champion Grand Prize Award goes to…

Kirthi Jayakumar | India

One of Kirthi’s nominations states, “I first fell in love with Kirthi's work when I read about her GBV app, and I lamented to myself that I wish I had such an app up and running when I was in the pits of my own GBV saga. [And I also admired] her response to Amazon Aramide's demise.”

Kirthi says on receiving the Champion Grand Prize Award, “This is a gift, a gift like nothing else. I find it hard to believe that a thing like patriarchy or racism or structural violence can thrive: it doesn't have the lifeblood of love and solidarity that we, feminists, women for change, do. I will cling to this lifeblood. Because it will sustain me, as it will sustain us all, as we dismantle the violences that lie ahead of, around, and among us on this planet.”

The Activator Grand Prize Award goes to…

Regina Afanwi Young | Cameroon

One of Regina’s nominations states, “She is like a community matriarch, to whom people come because they know they will be cared for. Through her updates, it is clear that there is not a need that Regina turns away, often utilizing her own resources to help those in need around her.”

Regina says on receiving the Activator Grand Prize Award, “I am very honoured and delighted to receive this amazing award! It is truly humbling to be acknowledged by my World Pulse sisters through the Spirit Award for the impact that I have been making through my work with persons with disabilities and vulnerable persons in my community. Thank you so much for all your wonderful motivation, inspiration and encouragement in this sisterhood.”

Congratulations to our Grand Prize Awardees! Be sure to congratulate them by connecting with each awardee on World Pulse.

The Storyteller, Champion, and Activator Awardees Are…

We also want to congratulate these sisters who are blazing new paths as Storytellers, Champions, and Activators in our community.

Congratulations to our Storyteller, Champion, and Activator Awardees! Be sure to send love and congratulations to each of these Awardees!

And congratulations to all of our World Pulse Spirit Awards Honorable Mentions!

Lastly, we want to congratulate each and every one of these women changemakers who have impacted the lives of so many!

Congratulations to each and every one of you—the World Pulse Spirit is possible because of every member of this sisterhood.

Let's keep the celebration going online by celebrating together at the 2020 Spirit Awards Celebration Ceremony on 26 February 2021 at 2:00 PM UTC! In this online ceremony, we’ll celebrate the three Grand Prize Awardees, the six Awardees in the categories of Storyteller, Champion, and Activator, and all Honorable Mentions. Let's celebrate as a community all of the inspiring nominations together. Register now and mark the date on your calendar and we’ll see you online!

Congratulations to the Grand Prize Awardees, and to each and every one who received an Honorary Mention. The work being done everywhere by those of us lucky to have found World Pulse, is work that is shifting the lives of so many women, and bringing us closer to the world we envision together. It is a celebration to see your work recognized. It is an honour to be in your midst. Shine on, dear Sisters, shine on.

Congrat sister Regi, you are one of the examplelary woman. Grace to your elbow

Hello loves,
What an honour to be among you all in this! As I process this, and the loss of my grandpa, I have been doing some writing, and am sharing a few other thoughts that arose on my journey with all of you on WP:

As I reflect, I thought I would share bc I am seeing all these different ways that WP has been part of a journey. I shared this quote with Manasa and Dawn as well:

"WP started as a process of helping others, where I am most comfortable as a recovering lawyer (!), giving advice, rather than receiving support.
Writing and sharing on WP was sense-making. WP offered a safe space to process my own journey and heal.

Over the years, I started to realize how important it was to show these women, who I am and my own struggles, as doing otherwise was a disservice to me and them. This is when my relationship with WP and the women deepened, as a member and an encourager. My comments become more authentic; I could connect on a deeper level when others understood I also struggle. This is when I was nominated for a Spirit Award!

Through WP I now better understand why I do what I do.Why building safe, supportive and inclusive organizations and relations for all women is a passion.

As an encourager, I am a witness to and support others on their journeys. This is often a process for so many, of understanding why and how we are called to action. It is consciousness raising. We encourage and empower others to shine our light, share their pain, and gifts. We build communities of care. WP is a glimpse of the world as it can and should be.

A great friend of mine, Karen, from World Pulse shared with me this quote: "The final stage of healing is using what happens to you to help other people. That is healing in itself.” — Gloria Steinem. This is true of World Pulse. For me, I started doing work on women’s rights before I realized I myself also needed healing. This has only deepened my passion, my purpose and my vision for my work."

Love to you all from Montreal,
Adriana

Congratulations, dear Adriana! I'm so happy for you! I am proud of you! Thank you for intentionally bringing a positive perspective to World Pulse even when you are dealing with personal challenges yourself. Dancing with you, dear.

Hello Adriana,
Congratulations sis, you deserve this and so much more. Thank you for being vulnerable, I feel very encouraged by you and your posts and responses to others' posts as well. You and I have one thing in common, we are on a healing journey and I also struggle with not putting my voice out there because I had a lot of healing to do but now, sharing my story and my voice and support others is giving me that much needed authentic voice because I am whole.

Thank you for being you, truly!

With Love,
Saum

Oh Saum! It was so heartwarming to get your message. Yes, keep on healing, as we heal ourselves, we help heal others. You are whole, you are bountiful, you are strong.

Huggggsss!!

"You people, you people, you people! This is just wow!" (you have to say it quickly,, hands in front of chest, fingers up, palms facing forward, with a back and forth whole body dance, and with a Kenyan accent--to get what I'm trying to communicate ;-) )

Ahsante sana sisters, for the love, honour, and celebration of what we do together. Thank you for being my sisters, audience, along-siders, encouragers, accountability partners, and quality controllers.
Thank you especially for the time you have given me in reading my stories and comments, and the spaces you have made for me in your minds and hearts with wide open arms, and in such a short period of time. I am all the richer for having found you, so, thank you, muchly, muchly :)

And thank you, World Pulse for all the ways you encourage us to gather together, to share and grow!

Sending lots of sparkles today :)

Aww, thank you Ate Paulina. I appreciate your affirmation of my interactions with your stories and stories of other sisters here too. Because I started off being concerned by the length of my comments, but some words come and they just want to be put down. So I feel happy to know that they are loved, anticipated, and well received. Your giving value to that blessed me, so thank you :)

I hope this thing has like a presidential condition, you know like you can't win in the same category again in a space of five years or a decade or something like that. It makes room to keep building, encouraging, and acknowledging more World Pulse spirit people.
I appreciate your acknowledgement, Chidimma
